HIDDEN
STORY
Final Major Project
The initial idea of this collection of ‘Hidden Story’ is from my Mother’s Kimono, which was hiding in her drawer and was discovered after her passing. Since the Kimono industry has shrunk in Japan, I wanted this tradition to continue into the next generation, so I have used this iconic garment to raise interest in the Kimono. I have expressed the natural cycle in which the flowers bloom, the petals fall and pile up on the floor and then they bloom again. Additionally, it contains my wish that the Japanese tradition of the Kimono is inherited and continues forever.
In times gone by, red was a forbidden colour. Back then people wore red as an undergarment of a Kimono, which was usually hidden. This Kimono was inspired by this story.
The motifs are peonies and chrysanthemums. The flowers bloom, the petals fall and pile up on the floor and the flowers bloom again. It is like our lifecycle and contains the wish that the Japanese tradition of the Kimono that is inherited and then continues forever.
Avocado produces a pale tint of red, which is pink. It is a hidden colour of avocado.
A keyword of this project is 'hidden'. Beads, sequins, bells, and needlelace balls are hidden in the embellishment.

Avocado dyeing, Shibori, double knitting, pleating, soldering iron and fabric manipulation... Embroidery and handcraft techniques play the harmony.
